Examination and Vaccination: the first 6 Months

A thorough examination of your puppy or kitten by a Veterinarian within the first couple of weeks of adoption is very important. In addition to evaluating your new pet for underlying congenital or infectious diseases, we will discuss common medical problems to watch for and review any prior medical records. We can then make individual recommendations for diagnostic testing, vaccinations, or deworming. You will be guided in any training, nutritional, or behavioral questions you may have.

Below are the typical schedules for the first six months. These schedules may be adjusted based on prior vaccinations and risk factors for your pet. Pet accident and illness insurance is strongly recommended and most cost effective if obtained while your pet is young and before any problems arise.

Spay or Neuter and Microchip Visit: Age 5-6 Months

Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted pregnancies and reduces hormone related behaviors such as territory marking and fighting. It can also greatly reduce or eliminate potential future health problems including uterine infections (pyometra), mammary cancer, prostate disease, and testicular cancer.
